I thought I remembered a time in which we could vote to nix a song for a year?
(Or maybe I'm just hopeful, maybe I've had too many of Danny's drinks and its clouded my judgment over the past few years?)
So yeah. A thread to talk about that song. The one you hate. In a fun light-hearted kinda way.
Cause we all know the DJs rock the f*cking house week after week, keep us dancing till the wee hours, and actually *play* requests!
Mine?
I cannot stand that insipid "I kissed a Girl" song.
Sure, sure, it's got all the makings of a good pop song, its catchy, repetetive, listen to it once, you know the words.
but its so damned ANNOYING! not to mention completely homophobic. (marginalizes the lesbian experience, exposition through the hetero lens for the male gaze, and if it was a guy singing "i kissed a boy" there's no way it would be top 40)
And while I would *never* deign to question the great wisdom and authority of our lovely staff and DJs... if the time ever came... that song would be first on my "please dear god, i would pay money to never have to hear this song at bagg again" list.
What's yours?

Re: Oh Dear God... not THAT song!
Fri, October 17, 2008 - 11:14 AMI hate that song too, only because I heard it every twenty or thirty minutes when I worked front desk at a gym. They didn't even play the original version but the sped up dance one.
Yes, nix that song!

I'm in agreement with both of you.

Re: Oh Dear God... not THAT song!
Fri, October 17, 2008 - 1:23 PMAbsolute hatered of said song. For exactly the same reason. And wasn't the song already done (in an I thought at the time horrific way) in the 90's? Well this is worse. It's the song that makes me want to go home and sleep rather than staying out on a Wednesday night. That song repulsed me on every level. Like vicerally.
We did vote songs out of the club last year during BM I believe. I'd love to never hear that song again. I'll chip in on the money you're paying. -

Re: Oh Dear God... not THAT song!
Fri, October 17, 2008 - 1:56 PM"I Kissed a Girl" in the 90s was by Jill Sobule, and is not the same song at all. That one was a quirky ditty by a jewish folksinger. Who, by the way, has DEFINITELY kissed a few girls, and not just in a "lesbians are in style" kind of way. -
-
Re: Oh Dear God... not THAT song!
Fri, October 17, 2008 - 2:08 PMbleh. I didn't like it. Not as much as I don't like this thing... Definately no viceral hatered was attached to that song, but it did get over played and I was dating a woman who had formerly identified as les not bi and her ex was trying to get her back... So I think it's understandable that I didn't like the song... (Plus I worked in a coffee shop where we heard it six times a day.)

So, I haven't been to BaGG in a while, so perhaps my opinion doesn't count, but you get it anyway. I don't think it's necessarily homophobic...and yes, I do like the song (I love being a voice of dissidence!) Seriously, the only way I finally did kiss a girl was because I was drinking...and it transitioned into much more than that later(sans drinking), but ya gotta start somewhere. Anyway, there's of course much more to this discussion that I won't get into.
Plus, drunk girls making out with each other is the BASIS of all frat parties - what ELSE are they supposed to sing about!?!? </sarcasm>

Sat, October 18, 2008 - 12:30 AMAt least they aren't bringing sexy back. -
-
Re: Oh Dear God... not THAT song!
Sat, October 18, 2008 - 2:11 AMI would rather listen to sexy back for 5 hours straight at Bagg then ever have to hear "I kissed a girl" agian.
Oh wait. I'd do that anyway.
I'm in the minority here that finds that song hilarious.
***
And i DO think that the new "i kissed a girl" by Katey someone is at least bigoted, if not homophobic.
It's right there in the lyrics "i don't even know your name, it doesn't matter, you're just my experimental game".... wow. insulting much?
But gender politics is a hot button issue for me ;) -

Re: Oh Dear God... not THAT song!
Sat, October 18, 2008 - 10:38 AMSo what's the difference between the meaning of the two songs, really? If you read the lyrics, they both are basically the same...IMO.
"I kissed a girl" by Jill Sobule
Genny came over and told me 'bout Fred
" He's such a hairy behemoth, " she said
" Dumb as a box of hammers
But he's such a handsome guy. "
And I opened up and told her 'bout Larry
And yesterday how he asked me to marry
I'm not giving him an answer yet
I think I can do better
So we laughed
Compared notes
We had a drink, we had a smoke
She took off her over coat
I kissed a girl
So she called home to say she'd be late
He said he'd worried but now he feels safe
" I'm glad you're with your girlfriend, tell her hi for me "
So I looked at you, you had guilt in your eyes
But it only lasted a little while
And then I felt your hand above my knee
And we laughed at the world
They can have their diamonds
And we'll have our pearls
I kissed a girl
I kissed a girl, her lips were sweet
She was just like kissing me
I kissed a girl, won't change the world
But I'm so glad I kissed a girl
And we laughed at the world
They can have their diamonds
And we'll have our pearls
I kissed a girl
For the first time
I kissed a girl
And I may do it again
I kissed a girl
I kissed a girl
I kissed a girl her lips were sweet
She was just like kissing me
But better
I kissed a girl
Won't change the world
But I'm so glad
I kissed a girl
For the first time
I kissed a girl
"I kissed a girl" by Katy Perry
This was never the way I planned
Not my intention
I got so brave, drink in hand
Lost my discretion
It's not what, I'm used to
Just wanna try you on
I'm curious for you
Caught my attention
I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chapstick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
I liked it
No, I don't even know your name
It doesn't matter,
You're my experimental game
Just human nature,
It's not what,
Good girls do
Not how they should behave
My head gets so confused
Hard to obey
I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chap stick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
I liked it,
Us girls we are so magical
Soft skin, red lips, so kissable
Hard to resist so touchable
Too good to deny it
Ain't no big deal, it's innocent
I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chap stick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
I liked it -

Re: Oh Dear God... not THAT song!
Sat, October 18, 2008 - 11:15 AMGirl is out drinking with girl.
Girls kiss.
Boys may or may not be jealous and said potential jealousy is reflected on by singer.
The experience of kissing a girl and how it's like girly things is discussed and rehashed.
See. Same song. ;-) Thanks Jaded. I hate this thread, I get songs I hate stuck in my head. -

Re: Oh Dear God... not THAT song!
Sat, October 18, 2008 - 12:01 PMBrian,
Tilt head to one side, take your hand and hit the opposite side of your head and the tunes will tumble out onto the floor. Make sure you hit multiple times in rapid succession, though. Of course, there is the small problem of the tunes being replaced by a loud ringing sound...but they are working on that.

Sun, October 19, 2008 - 8:47 AMHow dare you chronicle the faux paus of a serious artist like Katy Perry! Bastard! -

Re: She kissed the floor and liked it as well....
Thu, October 30, 2008 - 2:46 PMI am the ONLY person who likes that song? You must not have had the "oh, does your cherry Chapstick make my Hershey's chocolate lip balm taste like cherry chocolate?" Kiss? Lick. Yummy. "Yeah it does!" Repeat. Kiss other people to show our discovery. Repeat.
God, I felt like the song was my personal jingle. I wasn't "in love" because she was my friend. And I certainly hoped either of our boyfriends at the time weren't jealous. Of course they weren't once the taste testing began.
Of course, I don't hear it every week or on the radio. So, I guess that's the sticking point. -
-
Re: She kissed the floor and liked it as well....
Thu, October 30, 2008 - 2:54 PMI think part of my disdain for this song is related to my frustration with girls in the past who did the "hee I'm drunk, let's make out" thing to me. It's frustrating because I know if they were sober, it wouldn't be happening. So now, if a girl wants to make out with me when she's drunk, she needs to sign a consent form before alcohol. heh. -
-
Re: She kissed the floor and liked it as well....
